Letter, 5/30: Fischer fights for E15
Biofuels, like ethanol, play an important role in Nebraska’s economy and in protecting America’s energy security. That’s why giving consumers a choice of E15 -- a fuel with 15 percent ethanol -- is a win-win.
Sen. Deb Fischer understands these needs. And that’s why I’m grateful she is working to correct an outdated and misleading Environmental Protection Agency regulation known as Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP), which measures how quickly fuel evaporates.
The Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act (S. 517, H.R. 1311) will fix the arcane EPA policy, which blocks sales of E15 during the summer driving season. Clarification of this policy will simply hold E15 to the same standards as regular gasoline and ensure convenience stores have the freedom to give their customers the choice of E15 year-round.
Most importantly, this legislation will allow American drivers to choose a cleaner-burning, less expensive, biofuel blend at the pump during the summer.
The American ethanol industry supports more than 300,000 jobs. In addition, American ethanol has helped displace over 500 million barrels of imported oil in 2016 alone. Higher blends of ethanol, like E15, can help build upon the progress we have already made.
E15 is good for Nebraska and good for drivers across America.
